The third and final round of #IronViz was announced recently and requires the use of the new Tableau 10 Device Designer feature. I love designing small and tall for mobile. It is something I do not get to do at work so I enjoy the challenge.
One issue that came up during my mobile design was the inability to add a new image to a phone layout and set a URL. Many have already figured out that you can add images to the default layout (outside of the view) and then add the image to the phone layout.
Here is the problem. If you have already started customizing your phone layout, the URL does not come over to the phone and you cannot set it from the phone layout. This seems like a bug to me.
What to do now? Pooja (Smarty Pants) figured out that deleting the phone layout and starting over with the default will bring over the URL. I did this begrudgingly because I had already invested some time with this design.
Well, you know this happened again while I was designing my mobile viz. I wanted to add another image and there was no way I was starting over again.
Let’s HACK the twb instead – always make a copy first warning!
Open the twb file in a text editor. Tip: If you saved the file as twbx, rename to .zip and extract it to get to the twb file.
I did a search on the filename (I was lazy, don’t judge): ‘download (2).png’. Apparently, I was lazy before because that third line is another download (2) in a different directory.
The results revealed that device designer creates zones in the twb file and each image is listed separately.
Notice above, the second line has no url. Well, let’s add it in there and see what happens. You made a copy right?
